About Mas Y Mas

Más Y Más - explosive power trio delivering a message of unity, sensuality and fiesta. Más Y Más play the original music of Rikki Thomas-Martínez and some standard Latin songs. An irresistible meeting of Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Reggae influences, woven together by driving dance rhythms. With a compellingly pure and unique sound, the songs and soaring harmonies raise the temperature wherever they play.

Formed in the Autumn of 1995, these three experienced and well respected musicians have played to enthusiastic audiences in a variety of venues. Energetic and capable in any situation, from stately home house parties to heaving dance halls and World Music festivals. Whatever the occasion, see them together on stage and watch the chemistry happen before your eyes as this massive three-piece rock the house.

From Anglo-Spanish origins, Cross-cultural musical traveller Rikki Thomas-Martínez has moved with his Spanish guitar within the sonic worlds of Latin, Flamenco, Asian, and western music and sets Más Y Más ablaze with a uniquely hot flavoured style. Half Spanish and half Welsh he writes and sings in Spanish, English and French, on a diverse range of subjects dealing with issues such as racism, inequality and poverty. Taught and mentored by El Entri, one of Spain’s greatest Flamenco Guitar masters, Rikki has brought his very Spanish/ Latin musical influences to Más Y Más. He has suffused them with the sensibilities of a songwriter brought up on a diet of Marley, Dylan and other English-speaking writers. This is not fusion music. It is original music bred from a man with a Mestizo heart.

Conguero Richard Kensington, a world-class percussionist, keeps the floor heaving with his relentless rhythmic charge. Trained in Cuba by one of the greatest Cuban teachers, Chaguito he roots Más Y Más in driving dance rhythms. Having developed a unique style combining congas, bass drum, cajon and Clave, he uses this massive percussion sound to drive the music of Más Y Más.

Wayne D. Evans, double bass player, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter completes the trio, bringing years of experience, humour and energy, not to mention his sublime bass-lines played in a unique, compelling and driving style on his old brown wooden instrument. Wayne’s fiery musical talent has contributed to punk, new wave, reggae and country music as it has evolved over the last 4 decades. He has also enjoyed success playing with the likes of “Gaffa”, “The Marcel Marceu Sound” and supporting Harry Stevenson in “The Last Pedestrians”.

Mas Y Mas References

Dawn Manners, City Lights
They are proper musicians in that they have been charming their instruments for years - long enough to embrace the audience in the splendour and mystery that this level of accomplishment can provide.

Jim McLaughlin, Organiser, Whitby Musicport Festival
Más Y Más brought their sun drenched Latin rhythms to an overcast Festival Sunday afternoon - Taking the audience with them on a journey into the familiar and not so familiar and by virtue of their fine musicianship coupled with a great sense of fun they managed amongst a myriad of great acts to make themselves one of those that people remembered with a smile.... oh and the CD is pretty good as well.

Cork Evening Echo
Más Y Más, Latin music in the style of The Clash...they bring a unique combination of flair, passion and originality to the fore.

Chris Pentney, Folkworks/The Sage Gateshead
Más Y Más brought Latin warmth and sunshine to a rainy Northumberland afternoon with irrepressible rhythms, songs and loads of personal charm. This band works well in a concert setting: you can tell the audience would leap up and dance if they could, but there is plenty in the music and presentation to content them with foot stomping and wild hand-clapping.

The Hexham Courant
It looked as if the rest of the afternoon would be lost but the Queen’s Hall opened up the theatre, players and audience carried over the gear to a full house of dripping, steaming devotees. At last on stage in a wonderful and exhilarating climax to the Gathering came the Anglo-Spanish trio Más Y Más with an hour-long gig of Flamenco, Mexican, Afro-Cuban, Reggae and more. They were totally magic, full of humour, manic gestures and great songs. (Please, Queen’s Hall book them to come back soon.) It was a great end to the most gregarious of gatherings.
