About Sophie Garner Jazz Band

Sophie Garner has established herself as one of the most talented performers coming through the UK roots music scene.

Sophie has a very powerful voice and charismatic stage presence. Her music is a blend of Jazz, Blues, Soul and Rock. Sophie draws her influences from many different genres of music and this has influenced her to become a very powerful and prolific performer. Sophie’s music has attracted a fan bass that crosses genres and age groups.
 
She has performed at thousands of jazz and blues clubs, music festivals and concerts across England, Europe and the Middle East since she was awarded for being the finalist in the Perrier Jazz Vocalist of the Year competition. Her debut album ‘Champagne and False Eyelashes’ received critical acclaim upon its release by leading jazz critics and received national air play. 

She has opened for Will Young, The Sugababes and McFly and entertained the likes of Van Morrison and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Fans include one of Sophie’s musical hero’s Keith Emerson of Super group Emerson Lake and Palmer. She has played to sell out audiences at London's leading Jazz club Pizza on the Park and has even performed at The Houses of Parliament! Sophie has appeared on many radio and TV programmes both in the UK and Europe as well as writing and performing music for film.

Sophie Garner has performed many times in Dubai, including the launch of Grazia fashion magazine. In September 2006 she appeared for two nights at Pizza on the Park in London and she has also sung on numerous TV and radio shows, including “Swing Time” for BBC Wales, “Metroland” for Carlton TV, “The Warehouse” for Channel 4, Sky News and Campbell Burnap’s show on Jazz FM. She has performed in a short film with Jack Shepherd called ‘Lipstick’ for which she wrote the theme tune.

In addition, Sophie has performed for countless sessions and as a featured artist on many period drama productions. Her band has performed at Derry and Southport International Jazz Festival, and corporate clients have included The House of Commons, Ernst & Young, Anderson-Soames, Innovex, Talking Presentations, Sony and HMS Invincible.

The Sophie Garner Band is a versatile group who may perform as a Duo (Vocals and Keyboard / Piano) right up to an exciting 6 piece, consisting of Female Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Saxophone!

Sophie is able to tailor the band size and music to suit the event. For example, Solo Piano for the wedding followed by a Jazz Duo/ Trio option for Dinner, pre Wedding drinks, background music, etc. and ending with the full band playing in the evening!

Additionally, the band can vary the music in the evening to include a mix of all the music styles Sophie provides or concentre on one style of music.

With her clear, candid voice and unaffected style, Sophie Garner makes a striking debut. The majority of these sixteen tracks are standards, although none of has been done to death, two are her own and three are by her guitarist Jeff Kennedy. The great thing is that you can’t immediately tell the new ones from the old. She has the knack of making a song swing gently, which is far more difficult than giving it a hefty shove, and her interpretations are original but never at odds with the spirit of a song. She even brings a fresh angle to ‘You better go now’, long regarded as a Billie Holliday monopoly. Her band are excellent, too, especially pianist Duncan Haynes and saxophonist Brandon Allen. A great CD. Crisp playing, neat arrangements, great standards, fine new material and above all a singer who brings every song vividly to life.

One of the most stylish British vocal releases of recent months comes from Sophie Garner a thirty two year old graduate of jumping jive bands who combines a taste for forties and fifties fashion with a voice that contains hints of artistes as varied as Anita O’Day and Mildred Bailey. Her debut album, Champagne and False Eyelashes (Silk Records), supplies an exceptionally thoughtful mix of the familiar and unfamiliar.

I get a lot of albums sent my way, some good, some great and some exceptional. Garner’s album, “Champagne and False Eyelashes” fell firmly into the later group for me. Possessing a clear, well intoned sound. Her collection of originals and well chosen covers make for an extraordinarily radio friendly display. New women vocalists on the jazz scene are sadly ten a penny. My money's on Sophie Garner, a sure hybrid of Carmen, Doris and Monheit.

I rather like her vocal sound, which is a little more grainy than the norm these days and quality that gives her interpretations a touch of maturity and strength, with clear diction allied to understanding of the lyrics she sings and means. She is one of the few I shall return with pleasure. With originals (by Garner and Kennedy) mixed in with a few standards and some lesser-heard items from long ago. It all adds up to a commendable CD.

Garner matches a distinct swing style with a cool but intricate delivery, packing a punch in the simplest and shortest phrase…. I wager she could give Ella a run for her money; she certainly has the attitude. In the end what she offered was a rich tapestry, though having just had an amazing dinner, I likened the experience more to a gourmet dessert, say chocolate mousse: light, but incredibly rich… if you ever hear of her giving a live performance, go. No sense in eating shepherd’s pie when there's a ready roast available.
