Whats got 14 eyes, 3 horns & over 200 teeth? The answer is.... an entertaining 7 piece band called One Jump Ahead! They have also got over 200 songs in their repertoire that get people up on their feet and enjoying themselves! With an irresistible blend of jazz, blues, swing and fun, they generate a highly charged atmosphere that really lets the good times roll.
*They have wowed audiences from Islington to Israel, Clerkenwell to County Cork and from Docklands to Deutschland*
One Jump Ahead are led by singer, saxophonist and songwriter, Kit Packham, accompanied by piano, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet and another saxophone. Their repertoire includes great swing standards, ‘Rat Pack’ numbers and a few forgotten gems. With some carefully selected rock ‘n’ roll songs, 1960s soul hits and a few vintage pop classics, they keep the dance floor busy from start to finish. The swinging tempos, sizzling sax solos and humour of ‘40s jump/ jive star Louis Jordan have inspired Kit to compose his own, critically acclaimed material. While those attending private functions are unlikely to hear much of this, club and festival audiences can expect up to 50% originals.
Having been active for 23 years now, their albums always reflected the band’s good-time approach, beginning with ‘On the Shady Side of the Street’ (released under the name ‘Kit Packham & the Sudden Jump Band’). When they changed their name to ‘One Jump Ahead’ in the early ‘90s, it was also to be the title of their next album. Kit’s blossoming songwriting skills drew the phrases ‘quite superb’, ‘the best R&B lyricist in the country’ and ‘notable contributions to the genre’, from the critics. Their 1999 release ‘From Top to Toe’ also garnered rave reviews including: ‘Packham....confirms his Position at the very top of the compositional tree...’, ‘...classic R&B...’, and ‘...top-class playing...’. The latest album, ‘Jumpin On The Bandwagon’ features all original compositions and has further enhanced their reputation. ‘Packham's best album to date’,’...a complete show in itself...’ and ‘...very impressive...’ are just a few of the accolades this time. ‘You guys have sure done your homework!’ were New Orleans singer/ pianist Frankie (Sea Cruise) Ford’s words after the band accompanied him during his 1992 European tour. Paul Jones also praised them after their session for his R&B programme on BBC Radio 2. When they broadcast live from GLR for Mary Costello her comment was "Absolutely brilliant!" Kit has been interviewed on Jazz FM, RTM, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and BBC Radio Kent, and Blues magazine Blueprint (now called Blues In Britain) featured One Jump Ahead in its "Best of British" series. The best way to find out just how good they are is to go and see them, buy one of their albums or simply book them for your event NOW!
