Adam & Mary’s Spring Wedding with The One Step

Mary & Adam The One Step band

There are so many things to love about Adam & Mary’s big day with wedding band The One Step.

The couple planned wedding day at The Cottage Hotel in Nottingham and we were lucky enough to be able provide their wedding band for the evening.

We caught up with them to find out more about the inspiration behind their wedding and some highlights of their special day…

What was your best single moment of the whole day?

Getting married, (the actual ceremony). It’s what we are there for after all! Seeing Mary walk down the aisle, seeing her smile and how excited she was just made the whole day!

Why did you pick your venue?

It was one of the first things we did after getting engaged. We had arranged to go and see three or four venues over a weekend. The Cottage Hotel was the second one we saw. We instantly knew it was the place we wanted to get married. It had the ‘rustic’ sort of look we wanted, a good space inside and a lovely courtyard and gardens outside.

The events organiser was incredible. She had organised hundreds of weddings and really seemed laid back with our suggestions. Nothing was any trouble for her and she really relaxed us from the start!

Did you have a specific style or theme for your big day?

There was no specific style. Mainly the colour theme which was sort of dusky pink and purples with a hint of a woodland theme in the centerpieces and cake. It fitted well with the venue.

How did you hear about The One Step?

We were just googling wedding bands within our budget. We scrolled through loads of bands watching each ones promo video. Then The One Step came up with Mysterious Girl as the promo and it made me laugh as I thought it was something different. I looked at Mary and she knew I’d already booked them in my head!

What did they bring to your day?

We couldn’t have been happier with the band. They were easy to work with, kept the guests entertained all night, got them involved with a little game of who’s the loudest and were just generally really nice!

Did you have a first dance song and what was it?

The first dance was Africa by Toto. Since we met we have both loved that song. When I suggested it to Mary as our first dance she thought I was joking. She soon realised it made sense. The lyrics are great, it’s an upbeat song and most of all it’s an absolute tune. The band absolutely smashed it as well. I think they enjoyed playing it. A few of the guests said it was a genius choice for a first dance.

(And so do we, which is why we’ve included it at number one in our list of 100 alternative first dance songs!)

We spoke with Nick, frontman of The One Step to find out more about first dance songs!

Did you enjoy learning ‘Africa’ by Toto for a first dance?

Loved it. It’s such a classic tune. At first we were worried about doing it justice but we managed to pull it off by putting our own spin on it.

Is there a lot of pressure when performing a couple’s first dance song?

There’s always some amount of pressure doing the first dance live, but at the same time it’s an honour to be a part of such a memorable moment .

What do you think makes a good first dance song?

We’ve always found happy bouncy songs make great first dances. The bouncier the better! We recently performed a mash up version of ‘500 Miles’ by The Proclaimers that really worked.

Where did you draw inspiration or find suppliers for your wedding?

Main inspiration came from Pinterest to be honest. The colour theme, the cake and the centre pieces especially. We also took bits and bob’s from other peoples weddings we had been to. Things we thought were a good idea and things we felt wouldn’t really suit us.

What did you think of the service provided by Warble?

They were very easy to use, we booked the band pretty early on in the planning. As the day got closer they kept me up to date with what would be happening. The band called me a few weeks before to go over details and it was very efficient.

Best piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding?

Start planning early. Spread it out as much as you can.

We spent a month at first quite heavily planning things then stopped for a few months. Then went back and got on it again. We felt it helped us enjoy planning and kept the stress levels down! Also, enjoy your day it will all come together. Enjoy your ceremony. It’s what you are there for.

Looking back is there anything you would change?

We honestly wouldn’t change a thing. We were so relaxed about the whole thing. Lots of guests said it was one of the most enjoyable weddings they had been to. Not to sound cheesy but it was the best day of our lives.

Who were your favourite suppliers from the day?

The One Step from Warble Entertainment was probably the best purely because they were a big part of our night and they smashed it!

Our cake was made by The Little Miss Cake Company. Sam was great straight from the consult. It looked great and tasted amazing. She was so relaxed about it all too.

All the food was provided by the hotel and it was excellent. Really tasty.

We had a photo booth from PicMe Photo Booths they had so many props and masks it made for some hilarious group photos.

Finally our photographer Katie was amazing, she really pulled it out of the bag!
