If you'd like to hire a musician to play while you and your guests are relaxing at your drinks reception, it's often much cheaper to hire a band who offer a daytime add-on rather than hiring an entirely separate act. A lot of bands offer one or two band members to play a Live Lounge-style set for you for a small additional fee. Others will offer the whole band, a saxophonist or even a swanky jazz set! Not all bands have this service available so if it's something you're interested in, ask your adviser to recommend bands who do.

Between sets and up until curfew, your band will provide a playlist DJ service as standard. This means that while the band are offstage they'll play songs for your guests to dance to through a tablet or laptop. Often they'll allow you to choose which songs are added to this playlist. Other bands go one step further and will have a band member on hand to take requests. This is called a 'manned DJ service'. If you want the full shebang and would love a full DJ service with mixing decks, there are bands who offer this! Ask your adviser when choosing your band and they'll be able to help you find the perfect band to suit your requirements.

Wedding bands are usually onstage for a total of two hours, spread over either 2x 60-minute or 3x 40-minute sets. If you're lucky enough to have booked a venue with a curfew past midnight, many bands offer late finishes and even extra sets, so always check with your adviser before booking a band to ensure they can stay late enough!

The sound check usually takes just over an hour for the average sized band. Larger bands and those with more complex set-ups can take up to three hours. The sound check is nothing to worry about - the band members know how to keep it behind the scenes and incredibly low profile. Your venue should also know exactly how to keep guests separated from the dance floor area that this time.

If there are certain songs in your wedding band's repertoire that you'd love them to play then let them know and they'll happily include them in their setlist for the night. We'd strongly recommend leaving the rest of the song choices up to the band. Remember that your taste in music might not match that of your guests, so relying on the band to choose the songs is a fail safe way of ensuring your dance floor is full at all times. They know how to read the room and have years of experience of doing just this, so leave it to the professionals and you simply can't go wrong!
